PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an insertion and removal mechanism for a plug-in unit which can change a substantial length of a lever so as to provide the plug-in unit with sufficient insertion and removal force, maintains a mounting area on a front panel when mounted in a sub rack and shrunk, prevents a damage when an external force is applied, doesn't require high accuracy for manufacturing a printed board and provide a locking mechanism without restriction for downsizing. SOLUTION: The insertion and removal mechanism for the plug-in unit comprises: a sliding part 4 for extending a handle which is inserted into a lever part 1 movably and slides along the length of the lever part between the extending position where the lever part 1 is extended fully and the contracting position corresponding to the length of the lever part 1; and a locking part 5 which is provided in the sliding part 4 and a front panel 3, and fixes the sliding part 4 to the front panel, when the sliding part 4 slides to the contracting position.
