PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the weight of a stem which constitutes an electromagnetic actuator and a valve opening/closing mechanism, used for an internal combustion engine by constituting the stem of a material which has a lighter weight than that of the conventional material. SOLUTION: The weight of the electromagnetic actuator is reduced, in such a way that a pair of electromagnets 6 and 7, each of which is composed of a stator 5 and a coil 18, is provided to face each other with a gap 10 in between, and an armature 3 is positioned in the gap 10 so that the armature 3 may be moved forward and backward between the electromagnets 6 and 7 by means of the electromagnets 6 and 7. Then a first stem 15, which transmits the movement of the armature 3 from one electromagnet 6 to the other electromagnet 7 to a valve opening/closing valve 9 of the internal combustion engine and is made of a material, having a lighter weigh than that of the armature 3 has, is inserted into the guide hole 22 of the stator 5 of the electromagnet 7. By utilizing this electromagnetic actuator for the valve opening/closing mechanism of an internal combustion engine, the weight of the engine can be reduced.
