PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a positioning system capable of precisely positioning a portable telephone only with a single base station. SOLUTION: A base station 1 in a cellular mobile communication system has three sector apparatus 11, 12 and 13 including sector antennae 111, 121 and 131 respectively. Sector antennae 111, 121 and 131 receive electric wave signals encoded in CDMA codes from a portable telephone 2 respectively. The base station 1 RAKE receive above waves to detect the azimuth of the above portable radio telephone from the directivity of the above sector antennae 111, 121 and 131 and each finger level obtained from the RAKE reception. The base station 1 also detects the delay time of the above coming wave signals to detect the distance to the above portable telephone, thereby obtaining the position of the above portable telephone from the azimuth and distance.
