PURPOSE: A plug for closing a tapping hole of a converter is provided which is light, prevents clogging of the tapping hole and satisfactorily closes the tapping hole without deformation of the tapping hole due to frequent uses so that an outflow of slag into a ladle at the lower part of the converter is minimized, and the quality improvement and the cost reduction of molten steel are accomplished. CONSTITUTION: In a plug for closing a tapping hole of a converter, the plug comprises a hollow conical body part(10); and a plurality of cutout parts(15) which are formed at the lower corner(17) of the body part(10) so that they are conformed to the shape of the tapping hole, and the lower corner(17) is deformable when the lower corner(17) is pressed and mounted onto the tapping hole, wherein a diameter of the lower corner(17) of the body part(10) is somewhat larger than a diameter of the tapping hole so that the lower corner(17) closes the tapping hole when the lower corner(17) is pressed to the inner side of the tapping hole, wherein the body part(10) is formed by folding an arc shaped carbon steel sheet in a conical shape, a junction(10a) of the body part(10) is connected by welding so as to form an one integrated conical structure, and the welding junction(10a) is straightly extended in a length direction of the body part(10) from an apex(10b) of the cone to the lower corner(17), wherein numbers and depths of the cutout parts(15) are determined so that they are sufficiently deformed by the cutout parts(15) along the outer circumferential surface of the tapping hole, thereby conforming to the outline of the tapping hole in case that the lower corner(17) of the conical body part(10) is pressed into the tapping hole, and wherein the body part(10) consists of a carbon steel sheet having a thickness of 0.2 to 10 mm, and each of the cutout parts(15) forms a depth of 10 to 100 mm.
