PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp for enhancing luminance in a part opposed to a contraction positive column when a disordered diffusion positive column or the contraction positive column is generated in an internal electrode side area by increasing tube power to obtain high luminance to provide a lighting system using the discharge lamp. SOLUTION: This lamp is provided with a long and narrow translucent air tight container 1a, a discharge container 1 constituted by sealing an internal electrode 1e within the air tight container 1a and filling a discharge medium made mainly of rare gas and an external electrode 2 which is disposed along the longitudinal direction in almost contact with an outer peripheral surface, generates a disordered diffusion positive column or a contraction positive column PCd in an area near the internal electrode 1e, generates discharge at the inside of the discharge container 1 between the external electrode 2 and the internal electrode 1 so as to generate diffusion positive column PCd in an area pV away from the internal electrode 1e and is provided with a tube power increase means 2b for increasing tube power to feed into the disordered diffusion positive column or the contraction positive column PCs.
