PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high pressure discharge lamp and a high pressure discharge lamp device by which acoustic resonance is easily avoided, even in a miniaturized lighting circuit means, by providing a translucent ceramics discharge container for making a frequency for generating acoustic resonance as an almost single mode and an illuminating device using the lamp and device. SOLUTION: This lamp is provided with a translucent ceramics discharge container 1 provided with a surrounding part 1a having an almost spherical shape having sphericalness for surrounding a discharge space 0.53 to 0.84 and an inner diameter 2.0 to 6.0 mm and a pair of electrodes 2 mounted to the surrounding part 1a. The high pressure discharge lamp 11 for filling a discharge medium into the surrounding part 1a is turned on by lamp power <=50 W and a frequency 15 to 30 kHz. The range of suitable sphericalness is 0.57 to 0.80 and the range of the inner diameter is 2.0 to 5.5 mm.
