PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element having high luminance and a long service life. SOLUTION: A structural material of an organic thin-film layer which is to be provided between a positive electrode and a negative electrode is a specified biphenylene compound expressed with general formula I. (In the formula, R1-R8 are independently are a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a hydroxyl group, an amino group, a nitro group, a cyano group, an alkyl group, an alkenyl group, a cycloalkyl group, an alkoxy group, an aromatic hydrocarbon group, an alkoxycarbonyl group, and a carboxyl group, and at least one of the R1-R8 is a diallyl amino group expressed as -NAr1Ar2 (Ar1, Ar2 are independently an aryl group, having 6-20 carbon), and two of the R1-R8 may form a ring).
