PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal halide lamp for providing excellent color performance under a light modulation state. SOLUTION: This lamp is provided with a discharge tube 20 made of a material showing reaction resistance to sodium at a high temperature, both of first main electrodes located at both end parts facing each other within the discharge tube 20 and an envelope 11 filled with nitrogen to be a contour surrounding the discharge tube 20. A sealing substance including mercury and metal halide within the discharge tube 20 does not include thallium and includes at least one element selected from a group made of MgI2 and MgBr2.
