PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate retrieval of a database by specifying concept. SOLUTION: To establish (66) a key concept for record prior to retrieval of the record of a document database 44, the concepts are defined relatively to a thesaurus-like hierarchical structure 46 of concept. For each database record, the key concept or its location in the hierarchical structure is stored while being related to the database record by using key concepts rather than text or other concrete content, and is mapped (68) to a concept location. The concept location is determined by calculating a distance value for each node from a combination of coverage values and anti-coverage values and selecting the node with the lowest distance value as a concept location.
