PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such a problem of a symbol information reading device for a two-dimensional bar code that, in the state where no load or the like is carried in, if any pattern similar to a bar code is present in the imaging region of the symbol information reading device, every imaging operation necessarily involves detecting and decoding processing on the bar code symbol and resultantly produces a processing waiting time when a new load is carried in. SOLUTION: The symbol information reading device is characterized in that information in characteristic part of luminance value information from a two-dimensional image CCD 4 having a photoelectric transfer surface is extracted and is stored in a first storing device, characteristic part information obtained from the previous or order imaging through the characteristic extraction is stored in a second storing device, the variation in the two pieces of characteristic part information stored in both storing devices is evaluated, and according to the variation in the two pieces of characteristic part information thus obtained, it is determined whether the CCD 4 is actuated or not. |
