The waste is crushed and then enclosed in a sealed cell without oxygen. Bacterial biomethanisation of the waste is then carried out by anaerobic fermentation whilst the humidity and temperature are controlled and maintained at 45 -60% and 45 -60 deg C respectively for a period of less than or equal to 10 years, preferably less than or equal to 5 years The means of maintaining the humidity and temperature of the waste is by controlling the amount and concentration of a liquid enriched in nutriments and microorganisms. The pH in the cell is between 5 and 10, preferably between 7.5 and 8.5. The liquid is a lixiviat from another young cell. The biomethanisation reaction is total and the waste produced is biologically inert. The biogas produced during biomethanisation is used for different processes such as lighting, heating, electricity generation or cogeneration. The waste after biomethanisation is dried by evacuating the liquid from the cell, removed from the cell, and undergo a further process of extraction, screening, sieving, incineration, conditioning or deferrisation. The results are stored, incinerated or burned. Installation for carrying out this process, comprising at least one sealed cell with means of feeding a liquid rich in nutriments and means of extracting a lixiviat, means of extracting biogas, and means of controlling the hygrometry, temperature and pH. The base and sides of the cell have a layer of china clay to make them impermeable passively and a high density polyethylene membrane for active impermeability. The installation includes a water treatment plant, rainwater drainage, a composting unit and a sorting station. The installation contains 7 cells which are used in heptennial rotation.
