PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a picture reader capable of correcting the position of a picture read sensor in accordance with the floating position of an original on a platen. SOLUTION: An elevator 16 for making the distance between a carriage 4 and the platen variable is provided with a shaft 21 for supporting the carriage 4 in the state of being movable in an axial direction on one side of a scanning direction, a rail 24 supporting the carriage 3 on the other side of the scanning direction, a spacer which can be inserted between the carriage 4 and the rail 24, and a knob 41 which can switch this spacer between an insertion position and a not-insertion position. By such a simple operation as rotating the knob 41, the carriage 4 is elevated or lowered from a housing. Thus, the position of the picture read sensor can be corrected corresponding to the floating position of the original on the original and corresponding to the position of the original on the platen. The focal distance of a lens can be corrected easily.
