A tool joint having a monolithic body (12) with a bore (14) therethrough and a threaded section (20) at a first end of the body (18) for connecting with a complementary threaded member and a neck portion (22) of the second end (21) of the body, the body having an upset portion (16) with a generally outer cylindrical surface (17), radially outwardly projecting formation portions (24) monolithic with and on the upset portion of the body, the upset formations being in number and of a radial dimension such that an imaginary cylinder formed by circumscribing the formation portions is concentric with, and has a diameter greater than, the diameter defined by the outer cylindrical surface.
