The present invention may be regarded as a video recording system and method of transferring non-time-critical, error-intolerant data stored or to be stored on a disk drive (60). The method includes sending a sequence of commands generated by a host processor (80) to the disk drive (60) to transfer time-critical, error-tolerant data; selectively interposing a first command into the sequence of commands to initiate a first transfer of the non-time-critical data; transmitting an error signal generated by the disk drive (60) to the host processor (80), the error signal indicating whether data transfer errors occurred with respect to the first transfer of the non-time-critical data; and selectively initiating host-processor-resident error recovery in response to the error signal to achieve an accuracy required for the non-time-critical data while maintaining a required data transfer rate of the time-critical data.
