Sugar absorption inhibitors originating in evening primrose seeds which are highly efficacious in preventing and ameliorating diabetes and preventing obesity. These sugar absorption inhibitors are characterized by containing as the active ingredient an alcoholic extract of evening primrose seeds. It is favorable that the above-described evening primrose seeds have been defatted. It is favorable that the above-described evening primrose seeds are extracted with ethanol, preferably ethanol containing 70 to 85% (v/v) of water. The above-described sugar absorption inhibitors are characterized by containing as the active ingredient polyphenol(s) originating in evening primrose seeds. It is favorable that the above-described polyphenol comprises one or more members selected from among gallic acid, ellagic acid, catechin, pentagalloyl glucose, procyanidin and proanthocyanidin. A process for producing the above-described sugar absorption inhibitors characterized by comprising the following steps A to C: A. the step of pressing evening primrose seeds to separate oily components therefrom, thus giving a press cake; B. the step of defatting the press cake with a fat-soluble organic solvent to give a defatted matter; and C. the step of extracting the defatted matter with an alcohol and concentrating or evaporating to dryness this extract.
|
