A waste water treatment system (10) for removing sludge from within a rectangular clarifying tank (12) having a plurality of sludge collector flights (60) attached to a pair of parallel chains (40, 42) for collecting sludge and scum within the waste water. Each of the collector flights (60) includes a non-metallic elongated main body portion (143) having spaced top and bottom walls (200, 202) connected by spaced front and rear walls (204, 206) for defining a hollow, interior cavity (208). Buoyant foam material (220) is disposed within the interior cavity (208) for increasing the buoyancy of the collector flight (60). The waste water treatment system (10) further includes plastic bull and drive sprockets (36, 38) mounted to a drive shaft (34) running across the width of the tank (12), and a chain drive assembly (30) for driving a pair of parallel drive chains (40, 42) attached to the drive sprockets (38). The drive assembly (30) causes rotation of a drive shaft (34) through a chain link attachment to the bull sprocket (36). The rotation of the drive shaft (34) causes the rotation of the attached drive sprockets (38) which, in turn, drive the parallel drive chains (40, 42). |
