The phase shift angle phi between the virtually-pure sinusoidal voltages from primary-side voltage (Ur Us and Ut) sources (7, 8 and 9), and their individually-associated sinusoidal currents (iR, iS and iT), is adjusted. The adjustment preferably takes place in normal operation at least, and preferably automatically. The objective satisfied by this adjustment, is that the phase angle differential between: the three star-connected voltages (UCR, UCS and UCT), directed in this succession from the three main current connections (1, 2 and 3) of the matrix converter MC to a real or imaginary star point (5), and: the main input currents (i1, i2, and i3) to this matrix converter, approximates or equals zero.
