A device for electrochemically removing NOx from low temperature exhaust gases comprises an absorber body (1) impregnated with a liquid alkaline electrolyte (4) with channels (2) and electrode pairs (5, 6). The electrolyte is a molten salt whose anions are partially replaced by halide ions, hydroxide ions and/or oxide ions so that the melting point of the salt is lowered. An Independent claim is also included for electrochemically removing NOx from low temperature exhaust gases comprising impregnating an absorber body with an electrolyte, applying an external voltage to an electrode pair arranged in the absorber body, and passing the exhaust gas through the channels.
