A second memory (25) stores data representative of an amount of money to be paid out. After writing in the first data, the device is brought into operative connection with a terminal of the provider of the goods to write in the second data i.e.the cost of the goods. It is then brought into contact with a second terminal of the goods provider. This terminal has operating elements and a display. In accordance with a predetermined actuation of at least one operating element, a first control process in the control unit of the data carrier is triggered. The first control process is the storage of the predetermined actuation of the operating element of the second terminal. With further connections of the data carrier to the first terminal, new data are transmitted from the terminal to the data carrier and are compared with the stored second data. Only when a successful comparison is made, and with a stored actuation, is an amount of money corresponding to the second data transmitted from the memory to the first terminal.
