The method for operating a valve uses a control which maintains the force on the shut-off component between a minimum value required for sealing and a maximum value which causes abrasion and jamming of the valve. this is achieved using a power transfer system comprising two plates (1, 2) with interlocking indentations which are biased against the closing direction of the valve by a spring (3). An Independent claim is included for a mechanism for operating a valve as described above.
