An electromagnetic sensor has an impact surface (6) for solid particles (7) contained in a gas flow and is connected to an analysis unit. The sensor comprises a rectangular rod shaped waveguide (2) in which longitudinal waves are generated when a particle hits the impact surface. The longitudinal waves are converted to transverse waves on reflection and travel down the waveguide where they are detected by an electromagnetic converter at the waveguide end. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a cone shaped waveguide; (2) an electromagnetic sensor for detection of electric charges that are generated by particle impact.
