PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device permitting to improve picture quality when displaying a moving picture. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display device is provided with a liquid crystal panel 11 for displaying a picture according to a video signal, lighting parts 12, 13 for lighting the liquid crystal panel from behind, a maximum brightness level detection circuit 14 for detecting the maximum brightness level of the video signal, and a control circuit 15 for varying a ratio of a lighted period of the lighting part to an unlighted period according to the maximum brightness level detected by the maximum brightness level detection circuit.
