An engine shut off system for a hybrid electric vehicle 10 comprises an internal combustion engine 12 coupled to an electric motor 42 and a vehicle system controller 54. The vehicle system controller 54 is coupled to the internal combustion engine 12. In operation when the vehicle stops the internal combustion engine 12 is shut off after a configurable period of time. The configurable period of time may be manually set; based upon the amount of clutch travel; based upon a clutch position; based upon an electric steering movement; based upon the state of battery charge; or based upon a predetermined speed of the vehicle.
