PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a durable sized natural cellulose fiber knitted or woven fabric by subjecting the natural fiber containing knitted or woven fabric to an alkali metal carboxymethylation treatment. SOLUTION: This method for producing the durable sized natural cellulose fiber knitted or woven fabric, characterized by dipping a natural fiber-containing knitted or woven fabric in the mixture solution of a monohalogenated acetic acid or its salt with an alkali metal hydroxide, compressing the fabric and then thermally treating the fabric in an inert atmosphere to subject at least the surfaces of the natural cellulose fibers to an alkali metal carboxymethylation treatment. Thereby, the cellulose molecules on the surfaces of the natural cellulose fibers are modified into the alkali metal carboxymethyl cellulose and therefore changed into the same state as sized. Subsequently, the alkali metal of the alkali metal carboxylmethylcellulose may at least partially be replaced by a polyvalent metal such as calcium or zinc.
