PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a processing apparatus to process a drawing part of an optical fiber basic material into a tapered tip which has no eccentricity. SOLUTION: An optical fiber basic material processing apparatus has an upper holder 1 and a lower holder 2 and a controller 5 to control the movement of the two holders and a movement mechanism 6. The apparatus removes an unnecessary part 10D of a lower tip of the optical fiber basic material and form the necessary part of the lower tip into a tapered tip, by inserting a heating part 10B of the optical fiber basic material into a heating furnace 4 and introducing a lower tip 10A of the basic material into the lower holder 2 by moving downward the upper holder 1 holding the upper tip of the optical fiber basic material 10 and then by moving downward the lower holder 2 while heating the heating part 10B of the basic material held by the upper holder 1 and the lower holder 2. An outer diameter measuring part 3 is set on the upper part of the heating furnace 4. This outer diameter measuring part 3 measures XY coordinates of an outer diameter of the lower tip 10A and the heating part 10B of the basic material and, based on the data of the measuring, the controller 5 detects dislocation of the heating part 10B from the center of the heating furnace 4 and an introduction location of the lower tip 10A. Base on the data of this detection by the controller 5, the movement mechanism 6 adjusts the upper holder 1 and XY coordinates of the lower holder.
