PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease image persistence phenomenon in display due to the unstable state in the operation of a liquid crystal or DC voltage. SOLUTION: The device is obtained by laminating a liquid crystal cell 4 having a display function prepared by sealing a liquid crystal 3 having spontaneous polarization between alignment films 9, 10 of a pair of glass substrates 1, 2, respectively, on a liquid crystal polymer cell 20 having a ferroelectric liquid crystal polymer layer 21 and having a phase difference generation function to generate phase difference according to the polarity of the electric field applied. Therefore, by generating phase difference by changing the polarity of the electric field applied on the liquid crystal polymer cell 20, a constant display state can be obtained by controlling the polarity of the electric field applied on the liquid crystal polymer cell 20 even when the electric field applied on the liquid crystal cell 4 is changed. Since continuous application of DC voltage is not necessary when the same pattern is always to be displayed, image persistence phenomenon in display due to the unstable operation in the liquid crystal operation or DC voltage can be decreased.
