PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition which has characteristics required for electrooptic display elements, a wide nematic temperature range, a low viscosity, excellent high speed response, and the low temperature dependency of threshold voltage, and to provide a liquid crystal element using the liquid crystal composition. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal composition characterized by comprising one or more compounds selected from compounds of general formula (1) (R1 is a 1 to 16C alkyl or alkoxy, a 2 to 16C alkenyl, a 3 to 16C alkenyloxy, or a 1 to 16C alkyl substituted by a 1 to 10C alkoxy, provided that a double bond existing in R1 is apart from the benzene ring through one or more carbon atoms, when R1 is the alkenyl) as the first component and one or more compounds selected from compounds of general formula (II) (R2 and R3 are each independently a 3 to 16C alkenyl or a 1 to 16C alkyl or alkoxy which may be substituted by one or more fluorine atoms, provided that double bonds existing in R2 and R3 are apart from the benzene rings through one or more carbon atoms, respectively, when R2 and R3 are the alkenyl groups, respectively) as the second component, and having a nematic phase upper limit temperature of >=75 deg.C and a refractive index anisotropy (Δn) of 0.07 to 0.18.
