PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method, in which the strength of a wood material is estimated objectively by a method, where a change in the strength in the depth direction which cannot be judged from the external appearance, such as corrosion at the inside of the wood material is sensed simply and precisely, without substantially damaging the wood material. SOLUTION: Guide holes 2 in a prescribed diameter are formed into a plurality of places in the wood material 4. The wood screw part of a probe 1, which is composed of a body part 1a capable of being movably fitted to every guide hole and the wood screw part 1b, which is formed in one end of the body part and which is turned and advanced by encroaching on the inner wall surface of each guide hole is coupled to each guide hole. The probe is turned, the wood screw part is advanced up to a prescribed depth in the inside direction, and the rotation moment of the probe is measured, so as to match the rotation of the probe. The number of revolutions of the wood screw part, in a plurality of places, which is obtained by its measurement is compared with the rotation moment corresponding to the number of revolutions, and the strength at the inside of the wood material is estimated.
