PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low density organic inorganic composite material which particularly excels in toughness and, in addition, excels in mechanical strengths, rigidity, moldability and transparency. SOLUTION: The organic inorganic composite material is obtained by mixing (A) a layer compound having an interlaminar distance of 15-40Åand quaternary ammonium ions existing between its layers with (B) a thermoplastic resin having a primary amine or a primary amide at the end of the main chain and/or the side chain with its content of 0.04-1 mmmol/g to allow at least part of the thermoplastic resin (B) to get into between the layers of the layer compound (A).
