PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To insert a medium at an arbitrary position of a medium insertion port by an operator, to exactly detect an insertion position and to detect the size of the inserted medium. SOLUTION: This printer is provided with a plurality of medium sensors S1, S2 to S10 arranged at prescribed intervals on a straight line perpendicular to a carrying direction, a means for storing detection signals of the medium sensors in a prescribed storage area, a means for detecting the insertion position of the medium by depending on which detection signal of each of the medium sensors S1, S2 to S10 is the detection signal with medium from one end toward the other end of the medium sensors S1, S2 to S10 of a group based on the detection signal of each stored medium sensor S1, S2 to S10 and a means for detecting the size of the medium by depending on how many medium sensors exist for outputting the detection signals with media from the one end toward the other end of each of the medium sensors S1, S2 to S10 of the one group based on the detection signal of each stored medium sensor S1, S2 to S10.
