PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for extinguishing fire of an elevator capable of easily extinguishing fire in a hoistway. SOLUTION: In the elevator in which a hoist 3 and an elevator controller 9 are installed in the hoistway 1 and a main rope 5 is wound around a sheave 4 of the hoist 3 to hang a car 2 by one side of it and hang a balance weight 7 by the other side thereof so that the elevator ascends and descends among each story 21 to 23, fire sensors 35 to 39 are provided in important sections in the hoistway 1, and a fire extinguisher 31 is elevated and lowered by the hoist 3 when the sensors sense the occurrence of fire and is moved up to a fire extinguishing position to extinguish fire.
