Anode for a lithium-ion battery

A graphitic intercalation electrode for a lithium cell is produced by laminating particles of an exfoliated (expanded) graphite onto a metallic substrate by compression. A continuous graphite layer with no additional filler is produced. Various methods for producing expanded graphite are disclosed and a typical substrate is copper. Alternatively the particles may be compressed together without using a substrate. The graphite particles may be admixed with short carbon fibres before compression, the fibres being shorter than the thickness of the final graphite layer (no more than 350 microns). The graphite particles may be chemically treated at the ends of the graphite planes, for example by the addition of phosphorus or sulphur atoms.
