A blank of an aluminium alloy based composite material is cut (fig. 3A) and press formed (figs. 4A-5) at a temperature in the range of the solidus temperature of the aluminium alloy (Ta) to Ta-50{C. Also, a method of pressing a metal matrix composite material by placing a composite blank 42 on a die 69, forming the central remaining portions of the blank 42 by respecitvely lowering inner 64 and outer 65 portions of a punch 61 onto the blank 42. The inner punch 64 may form a boss (73, figs. 9 and 10)) of a crank damper pulley. In either method the composite may be formed by impregnating a porous metal oxide reduced with magnesium nitride, with a molten aluminium alloy (figs. 1-2B). Also, a method of processing a metal matrix composite sheet (150, fig. 16) sandwiched between an aluminium alloy sheet (150a, fig. 16) by pressing the central portion of the sandwich to form a recess therein and removing the aluminium from the remaining portion of the sandwich. The pressed material may form a brake disc. |
