The present invention relates to nucleic acid sequences encoding an amino acid sequence with pyrroline-5-carboxylate dehydrogenase activity naturally occuring in plants. Furthermore, the present invention provides methods for the detection of pyrroline-5-carboxylate dehydrogenase activity and for the production of transgenic plants with modified pyrroline-5-carboxylate dehydrogenase activity. Therefore, the present invention is useful for the development of an active substance, especially a fungicide and/or herbicide, in plants.
