Supramolecular assemblies which may be formed into biodegradable artefacts such as medical devices comprise an at least partially water soluble polymeric backbone comprising a plurality of covantently bound moieties, each moiety being noncovalently bonded to an at least partially water soluble pharmacologically acceptable compound wherein said assembly is less water soluble than either the polymeric backbone or the pharmacologically acceptable compound. Suitably the polymeric back bone may be formed by combining a polyol, for example a side- or main-chain aliphatic diol with a bifunctional aromatic anhydride and/or an aromatic anhydride acid chloride and/or a bifunctional aromatic acid chloride with the proviso that least one of the polymer precursors generates hydrogen bonding functionality upon polymerisation. |
