A method is provided for coalescing a plurality of message timers into a single message timer, for use in communications system utilizing the transfer of packet data. The grouping of multiple timers, where each timer corresponds to the update period of a particular message, reduces system overhead and simplifies message processing. One practical use of the method is in A11 registration requests made in a CDMA wireless communications system to keep a link alive with a packet data switching network (PDSN). A system to implement the above-identified method is also presented. |
