PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a grinding time almost constant by minimizing change of a gap between a grinding wheel and a roll surface, and eliminate a non-grinding part by completing the grinding within a grinding allowable time. SOLUTION: At the first grinding operation after a working roll 1 is newly mounted, grinding wheel waiting position is calculated using initial data from a higher computer to position a grinding wheel part 17 to perform grinding. At the second and layer grinding operations when the working roll 1 gets backlash at rolling operations, a pushing position measured at the former grinding is used for calculating the grinding wheel waiting position and positioning the grinding wheel part 17 so as to minimize the change of the gap between the grinding wheel part 17 and the surface of the working roll 1, thereby making the total time required for each grinding operation almost constant. Thus, finishing the grinding within a grinding allowable time eliminates the non-grinding part and prevents reduction of product quality and productivity.
