PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a coating film by which a coating film excellent in finished appearance and chipping resistance is obtained at the time of coating an automotive body, etc., in a three coat-one bake method for applying an intermediate coating, applying a base coating and a clear coating by a wet-on-wet system and baking and curing the three layers at the same time. SOLUTION: The intermediate coating, base coating and clear coating are successively applied on a base material coated by electrodeposition, and the applied three layers are simultaneously baked and cured to form the coating film. The intermediate coating consists of, by weight, 40-80% hydroxy-containing resin and 20-60% curing agent capable of reacting with the hydroxy, based on the total amount of solid resin component, and further contains 0.05-3% sulfonic-acid catalyst, based on the solid resin component.
