PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a sludge scrape-up machine constituted so as to be capable of efficiently scrape up the sludge, which is sedimented on the bottom of a sewage treatment tank, toward a sludge pit by flights moving along the bottom of the tank while preventing the whirling-up of sludge caused by the disturbance of water streams. SOLUTION: In the method for operating the sludge scrape-up machine A constituted so that a sludge scrape-up device 4 having a large number of flights 42, which move along the bottom 11 of the sewage treatment tank 1, arranged thereto is reciprocally moved by a drive device 5 so as to fall at the time of advance and to rise at the time of retreat to successively scrape up the sludge D sedimented on the bottom 11 of the tank toward the sludge pit P, the sludge scrape-up device is operated under a specific operation condition, especially under an operation conduction such that the speed of the flight 42 at the time of advance is set at 0.5-1.8 m/min and the speed of the flights 42 at the time of retreat is made faster than that at the time of advance and set to 2.3 m/min or less.
