The invention relates to an occupant protection device (6) for a motor vehicle (1), with an airbag (4, 5) which is explosively filled with gas on an accident. An occupant (2, 3) thus impacts the already fully inflated airbag (4, 5) on a forward displacement caused by an accident, whereupon the gas escapes through an escape opening (8, 9). The impact energy is thus limited to a degree which the body will survive. In order to prevent a thermal exposure of the occupants (2, 3) to escaping expansion gases, the outlet opening (8, 9) is arranged in a region of the occupant protection device (6) facing away from the occupant (2, 3). The above is thereby in particular arranged on the inside of a closed container (10), by means of which a problem-free application in various regions of the motor vehicle (1) is possible. |
