PURPOSE: An LCD and a method for driving the same are provided to improve a response speed of a liquid crystal according to a gate voltage in an LCD of a twisted nematic liquid crystal mode. CONSTITUTION: An LCD panel(10) is formed with a multitude of gate line, a multitude of data lines, a multitude of liquid crystal capacitors between pixel electrodes and common electrodes, and a multitude of thin film transistors connected with the pixel electrode of the liquid crystal capacitors. A timing controller(40) receives an image signal and a synchronous signal and generates a timing control signal. A gate drive portion(20) is used for applying a gate voltage of step form wave to the gate lines. A data drive portion(30) is used for applying the second gradation data voltage to the pixel electrodes according to the timing control signal of the timing controller(40).
