At least one syringe piston force sensor, such as a strain gauge mounted on a cantilevered drive arm 610, 611 of the piston elevator, senses the force required by the piston elevator section to move at least one of the syringe pistons forward, the force sensor signal being output to a controller which controls the movement of the piston elevator section on the basis of the force sensor signal.
