A pit assembly includes two pit components (2) and a base (14), each pit component (2) being a molded body having a top (4), sidewalls (8) and side edges (16,18) which lie generally in a plane whereby a pair of said pit components (2) can be juxtaposed with their side edges (16,18) engaging one another to form an open topped pit (6), the base (14) being, in use, interlocked between said pit components (2) to form the base of the pit (6). The preferred embodiments include details, which facilitate interlocking of the pit components (2) to form pits of sound construction as well as pits of extended height. Furthermore in the embodiments, which have a separate base component, the base (14) can be located at selected heights to thereby effectively enable assembly of pit components of selected depths.
