A discharge lamp lighting apparatus and a lighting appliance employing the same includes a discharge lamp DDL which is provided with a pair of electrode at least one of which is placed on an outer surface of a discharge vessel 11 wherein an inert gas-dominated discharge agent is filled, a high frequency generator HFG which is provided with an output transformer T and a switching apparatus Q1, a high frequency operation detector HFD for detecting a high frequency and outputting a high frequency operation detection signal, a controller CC, to which the high frequency operation detection signal is control input, for performing a feedback control to a switching apparatus Q1 to make the high frequency operation detection signal a first level and performing protection when the high frequency operation detection signal is changed to a second level and a no-load detector NLD for forcefully changing the high frequency operation detection signal which is control supplied to the controller CC to the second level when the nonleaded state is detected.
