A terminal at one end of a cylindrical dry cell is protected by a flexible insulating film sealed around the outer edge of the cell. In a particular embodiment, the cell comprises carbon rod 16, depolarizer mass 12 consisting of a mixture of carbon and manganese dioxide, electrolyte paste 14 and zinc can 10. The can is closed by layers 30 of paper and 32 of asphalt before the cell is encased in jacket 18 crimped to metal lid 22. The jacket may be of metal or spirally wound Kraft paper. It is covered on the outside by label 20. Where the jacket is of metal, an insulating sleeve (44 in Fig. 6, not shown) separates it from the zinc can, its upper edge being held in the crimp. Terminal cap 26 is insulated from lid 22 by washer 24 of cardboard or paper. Film 34 may be of plastics material, e.g. polythene or a vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymer, or a fibrous material, e.g. paper or cloth. It may be elastic and transparent. It is stuck to the rim by a cling agent or an adhesive, e.g. synthetic rubber solution. An annulus of cardboard with printing on it may surround cap 26 (Fig. 4, not shown) or a curved disc of card may be placed between the cap and the film before the latter is stuck down (Fig. 8, not shown). |
