An optical communication network (10), operable with multiple data transmission protocols, includes a central processing unit (CPU) (12) at the transmitter end of the network to modulate one or more optical sources (14), and one or more CPUs (26) at the receiver end of the network to interpret the signals transmitted. The receiver CPU (26) may be configured to be able to accept data from all of the transmitting wavelengths and interpret the sampled data as one packet or frame according to the given transmissio protocol. The transmission CPU (12) and the receiver CPUs (26) communicate the protocol to be used by a non-optical connection, or control channel (28), such as an electrical connection or a wireless connection. The control channel (28) can be used transmit different protocols to different receiver CPUs (26), so that each receiver CPU (26) can interpret portions of simultaneously-transmitted data that is addressed to it.
