PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device having high reliability and to provide its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device having a liquid crystal composition interposed between a pair of substrates via columnar spacers is characterized in that a frame-shaped light shielding layer consisting of light shielding photosensitive resin is provided on at least either one of the pair of substrates and the frame-shaped light shielding layer is irradiated with light from the back surface of the substrate. The liquid crystal display device, wherein an array substrate 2 and a counter substrate 9 are disposed by opposing principal surfaces of respective substrates to each other and the liquid crystal composition 12 is interposed therebetween via the columnar spacers 7, is characterized in that at least either the array substrate 2 or the counter substrate 9 is provided with the frame-shaped light shielding layer 8 consisting of a black resist which is irradiated with light from the back surface of the substrate 2. The irradiation with light from the back surface of the substrate 2 is performed before or after baking.
