PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical communication system that is drastically en hanced in data transmission efficiency. SOLUTION: In the communication system, adopted by communication units that transmit/receive data consisting of packets with a header part 1 and a data part 2 comprising data cells 2a at a variable data transmission rate, a transmitter side communication unit adds an error correction code 2ab to data cells 2a with a high frequency of error generation in the data part 2 and adds an error check code 2ac to the data cells 2a with a low frequency of error generation, and transmits the resulting data to a receiver side communication unit. The receiver side communication unit is made to request the transmitter side communication unit to retransmit the data cell 2a with an error on the occurrence of an error, in excess of the error correction capability for the error correction code 2ab, or when the receiver side communication unit detects an error by the error check d∥code 2ac.
