OPTICALLY ANISOTROPIC MEMBER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optically anisotropic member such as a polarizing plate excellent in transmittance and in extinction ratio. SOLUTION: The optically anisotropic member (e.g. the polarizing plate) having a metal light absorbing body grown on a vapor deposition surface is manufactured by vapor depositing particles to be deposited (e.g. Al) on the vapor deposition surface of a transparent substrate with >=82 deg. deposition angle with respect to the normal. By using the polarizing plate, transmittance of polarized light to be absorbed and the extinction ratio are drastically lowered while maintaining transmittance of polarized light to be transmitted. Especially this tendency is remarkable when the deposition angle is 87 deg. or larger.
