Class 9(1) A practice projectile is provided of the same calibre, weight and form as a normal projectile and comprises a head portion 1, a tubular portion 6 and a tail portion 12. Within the head 1 is a sub-machine gun barrel 2 having a flange 4 abutting an annular body 5 forming a cartridge chamber. The body 5 connects the barrel to a bolt 7 secured to a tube 9 extending through the rear of the projectile. Within the bolt is a firing pin 8 having a flange 20 and a rearward extension 21. The tube 9 has a liner 23 with a turned-in edge limiting the rearward movement of the flange 20. The liner 23 houses a displaceable abutment 10, whose forward movement is damped by a spring 22, and a propellant charge 11 adapted for ,electric ignition, one lead wire 14 being connected to a contact 13 on the projectile. A ring 34 pressing against the flange 4 holds the barrel 2 in position and the cartridge 29, Fig. 3, is held by a sleeve 30 fitting the forward end of the bolt. Two flanges 25 guide the abutment 10 in the tube 9, rearward movement of the abutment being limited by impact of the rear flange 25 against the edge of a tube 27. The tail 26 of the abutment 10 is shaped for propulsion by the propellant gases. To prepare the projectile a cartridge is first pushed on to the flange 16 of the sleeve 30 and then oushed into the projectile by the tube 9 with its bolt 7 and the inserts in the tube. Rotation of the tube 9 locks the bolt to the body 5. The charge 11 is then inserted and the wire 14 secured to the contact 13. |
